FedEx Announces Holiday Surcharge for Select Shipments: How Will This Affect Your Holiday Orders?

FedEx just announced that they will be implementing a holiday surcharge for select shipments this holiday season.

FedEx Introduces Holiday Surcharge for Select Shipments

Earlier in June, UPS announced a surcharge on Black Friday and holiday deliveries. The new “peak charge” as they call it, will affect select dates throughout November and December which include Black Friday and the week leading up to Christmas Day. For retailers that use UPS services, this brings a concern to consumers as to whether the holiday surcharge will have major effects on pricing this holiday season. On the bright side, the surcharge is an extra measure to help UPS acquire temporary assets in order to improve their delivery services this holiday season.

With that said, FedEx just recently announced an increase in certain surcharges for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground shipments for the holiday season. However, FedEx shipping surcharges will not apply to major shopping holidays unless your shipment “require additional handling, are oversized or unauthorized.”

Usual items on your holiday shopping list like clothing and toys will not see a rise in shipping fees. However, you can expect shipping to be a little pricier for certain Black Friday items this holiday season-- big screen TVs, major appliances, and furniture to name a few. As you know, most retailers offer free shipping on your minimum purchase and for top retailers, this covers nearly everything except for oversized items. With these surcharges in place, select items may be a little pricier this holiday season so we suggest running a price comparison now to make sure you’re not paying more than necessary.

FedEx holiday surcharge will be effective starting November 20, 2017, through December 24, 2017. The surcharge will affect FedEx Express and FedEx Ground in both U.S. and Canada. Additional charges are as follows:

  • Extra $3 handling (per package)
  • Extra $25 for oversized goods (per package)
  • Extra $300 for unauthorized shipments (per package)

How can I save on shipping during Black Friday and throughout the holiday season?

As we mentioned above, most major retailers including department stores and apparel and shoes retail brands offers free shipping no minimum every day. Bigger merchants like Target and Best Buy have also offered holiday free shipping no minimum throughout the holiday season in the past year. Along with announcing their holiday free shipping promotion, Target also released their holiday game plan last year which talks about upcoming promotions, Target’s famed “10 Days of Deals”, and price match guaranteed. As more information is released, we’ll provide you with the breakdown here on so make sure you subscribe to our newsletter below to stay in the loop.

Last year, more retailers hopped on the wagon and began offering holiday free shipping but there are actually a lot of retailers that already offer free shipping no minimum. Lesser known are retailers’ reward programs. Some programs are totally free to join and as a member, one of those neat perks is having access to free shipping. You can see the entire list compiled last year on everything you need to know about free shipping here. We’ll be updating the free shipping master list post soon so stay tuned! If you know of any other free shipping retailers or programs, help us add to the list and drop a comment below to share.

As the digital shopping trend spikes up, in store foot traffic has dropped dramatically for many retailers resulting in hundreds of store closures and bankruptcy in the recent year. As it is now, retailers will likely offer a bonus incentive for those who opt to pick up their online purchases in stores. Currently, Macy’s is offering 15-20% off pick up coupons as well as Walmart, who launched their Pickup Discount on thousands of items.

As new information is released, we’ll continue to provide updates until all sales are over. Stay tuned for more information as we near the holiday season.
